OVERVIEW

Introduction

One of the main challenges of buying anything online is trying to visualize what the object looks like in real life. But whereas returning a sweater that doesn’t fit is a relatively simple process, sending back a big-ticket or bulky item, like a dining room table, is much more difficult. Embracing 3D models and AR can help bring the in-store experience to online shopping.

Augmented reality is catalyzing a transformation in how consumers engage with retail products. Furniture brands have been quick to respond to these changing customers to allow shoppers to virtually place realistically-rendered, true-to-scale 3D models of furniture within their homes.

THE PROCESS

Design

I used Blender to model the two versions of the stool and texture it using the UV mapping method. The model was then imported into AR SPark Studio to build an interactive AR filter with options to pick from a variety of color and design variants.

HOW IT WORKS

Interactions

I used the Picker UI patch to add a UI element for the user to choose from a number of options and interactions like Screen Pinch, Screen Tap, Screen Pan, and Screen Rotate to tweak and play around with the stool so that the user can view and place it in their room as per their preferred arrangement.

Users can also change the item’s color, take a photo, watch a video, and shop — all through their mobile phones. This gives the customer a chance to:

  • View the object from different sides

  • Play around with different colors, styles, and patterns

  • See if the object fits in the room without having to break out the measuring tape

  • Move the object around the room

  • Get a good idea of what the room will look like with the new furniture.

With these immersive capabilities, AR furniture campaigns take the guesswork out of online furniture shopping. The more people interact with digital furniture, the more informed and confident they are in their decision to purchase it in real life, too. For Innowin, this means two things: a higher chance of purchase completion and a significant reduction in product returns.
